All good ideas. I just came back from the kiddies party this past weekend. We never got to the hunt since the kids enjoyed creating their pirate costumes soooooooo much and then playing pretend swash buckling stuff. So yes…I find its not the things that get a kids attention but the care, love and meaning behind it. (sorry for being so sappy)

I have this same problem every I go shopping. Giving gifts is great, especially when the gift are hand-made, and necessary. I'd say you can off-set any negative aspects of the gift by making sure the gift is as meaningful as possible--how long will it last? Can it be a family heirloom? Vintage stores are another great place to check out, since you could find something with a history, and you don't have to worry about packaging, or feel guilty about the resources that were used.

Many years ago we inherited an awesome medieval-looking sword, supposedly from a yard sale, and this has been the most alluring object for my little brother. For his own birthday, we searched a lot for something meaningful. In the end, we also did the treasure hunt (he and his friends loved it), and just tried our best to give him things to stimulate his OWN imagination and skills, not generic action figures or ...you get the idea. :)
